More custody decisions are reflecting the rights of fathers

Over the past few decades, the role of the father has shifted from simply a provider to that of an active participant in the parenting process for many Florida families. Along with this shift, more and more fathers are realizing the importance of their role of father. As such, many fathers are insisting that the rights of fathers be recognized in important divorce decisions such as child custody and child support.

Until just recently, it was generally assumed that the mother would have custody of the children. The father would often have the children every other weekend and maybe for two weeks during the summer. This arrangement was the standard expected with most divorce decrees.

As times have changed, more fathers have taken an active role in their children's daily lives. Economic conditions have sent more stay-at-home moms back into the workforce, and more men are becoming stay-at-home dads. With one parent working, the other parent takes on more parenting responsibilities. It is now common to see a father as a parent volunteer on a school field trip or even in the waiting room at the pediatrician's office.

As these fathers have become more active participants in the everyday lives of their children, they are realizing the vital impact that their participation has on their children. Regardless of the marital situation, children are usually better off when they have regular interaction with both parents. Recognizing that the rights of fathers are critical to the well-being of the children, more Florida fathers are insisting that their divorce include shared or joint custody of the children.
