Be considerate when asking a spouse for divorce

As the holidays approach, many Florida spouses are aware that this will be the last year that their family celebrates as a combined unit. The decision to divorce may have been made months ago, but very few spouses will broach the subject during the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve. When the time does come to discuss the matter, it is very important for the spouse who initiates that conversation to consider the feelings of the other party.

No one wants to be blindsided by the news that his or her partner is ready to call it quits. This is true even in cases in which marital unrest has been at play for some time. The spouse who wants out will almost always have an advantage over the one who is unaware that the marriage is over. During the initial discussion on the topic, it is important to remember that the other party will need time to process the information.

Spouses should also be prepared for a wide range of reactions to a request for divorce. Some will be pleasantly surprised that their partner seems to agree that divorce is the best path forward. Others will find that their partner is far more angry or upset than anticipated. Regardless of the reaction, it is important to let the other person work through those emotions.

Discussing divorce is never easy, but for many Florida residents, the process is less distressing than they imagined. As with most things that are easy to put off, it is better to jump in and get the divorce process started, rather than spending a great deal of time trying to determine the perfect way to broach the subject. Once the initial conversation has taken place, most spouses are relieved to begin the formal divorce process.
