5 techniques to increase motorcycle visibility

Riding a motorcycle can be fun and exhilarating, but it cannot be done at the expense of your safety and others on the road. One of the main factors that poses a risk for accidents is that motorcycles are not as visible as cars or trucks. Many drivers struggle to pay attention to motorcyclists. Learn how to increase your visibility as a motorcyclist and make the road a safer place.

1. Wear visible gear

Making yourself visible is one step to increasing your overall safety as a motorcyclist. There is a reason why construction workers wear neon oranges and yellows when performing work in an area with high traffic. This is a simple and cheap way to increase your visibility. Invest in some brightly colored helmets and jackets.

2. Apply reflective tape

Reflective tape on your forks and wheel rims acts as a light source and helps drivers see you. This is particularly helpful if you have a dark-colored motorcycle or frequently ride at night. Riding while the sun is down means you need to take extra precautions to make you and your bike more visible.

3. Tap brakes

Are you worried that drivers behind you are not paying attention to their surroundings? Maybe you notice someone behind you texting while driving. Perhaps they are applying makeup. Whatever the case is, lightly tapping on your brakes as a blinker helps catch their attention.

4. Be mindful of blind spots

The special areas around a vehicle are called blind spots for a reason. If you are in a driver's blind spot, he or she will likely be unable to see you. This can be dangerous especially when the driver is switching lanes. While it may be difficult to avoid all blind spots at all times, you can try to be aware of them and pass cars safely so everyone can see you.

5. Upgrade your lights

Maybe your headlights have become dull over time or are adjusted too low. It does not hurt to get new headlights to improve your own sight and your visibility to other drivers. Installing new turn signals, fog lights and taillights can help as well.

Riding a motorcycle responsibly is important. While you may be the most careful motorcyclist in the world, you never know if drivers are paying attention to you. Follow these tips to increase your visibility and reduce your chances of getting into an accident. If you or someone you know was involved in a motorcycle-relat ed crash, consult with a personal injury attorney.
